(1) Superior transportation

Wuhan is a thoroughfare to nine provinces, the flyover of China, a transportation demonstration city, and the largest inland hub for land, water and air transportation in China. It is also the center of national high-speed rail network and a shipping center in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

Airway: With an annual throughput of 35 million people, Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (Phase III), the largest aviation hub in Central China, has been completed and put into service. The airport provides 63 international and regional air lines with a passenger throughput of 2.62 million passengers, ranking 1st in central China.

Waterway: Wuhan has the largest inland port in the Yangtze River. The river-sea-through route is connected to international ocean liners, so from Wuhan, one can reach every corner of the world. Wuhan, Chongqing, and Shanghai are collectively referred to as three major shipping centers along the Yangtze River. In 2020, the container throughput of Yangluo Port reached 1,932,500 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 14.4%.

Railway: Wuhan is one of the four largest railway hubs in China and the “Heart of High-speed Rail”, with high-speed trains reaching 26 provincial capitals nationwide, thus forming a 4-hour economic ring; Wuhan has launched the Wuhan-Europe freight train service, which registers the second largest volume of shipments and the largest backhauls in China.

Highway: 14 highways converge in Wuhan.

(2) Education and science strength

Wuhan is one of the top 3 science and education bases in China. With a complete range of disciplines, it ranks 3rd in China in terms of comprehensive science and education strength. It is also a world leader in high-tech fields.

The world's first 128-layer 3D QLC flash memory chip, the world's first ultra-high-throughput nucleic acid test laboratory named “Fire Eye”, and the world's first inactivated COVID-19 vaccine

Research environment:

Wuhan is an important national science and education base and one of the three knowledge-intensive areas in China. According to the 2019 Report on Evaluation of Innovation Capacity of Innovative Cities, Wuhan ranked 5th in terms of innovation capacity. Among the top cities for research in the Nature Index in 2018, Wuhan ranked 4th in China and 19th in the world. There are 68 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2019, the city's R&D expenditure was 51.862 billion yuan (ranking 4th among sub-provincial cities), accounting for 3.20% of GDP. In 2020, the added value of the city’s high-tech industries stood at 403.212 billion yuan, accounting for 25.82% of GDP, and the total number of high-tech enterprises in the city reached 6,259 (ranking 5th among sub-provincial cities). There are 139 state-level innovation platforms and 118 state-level business incubators. Moreover, there are 19 industrial technology research institutes (a new kind of R&D institute) and 4 provincial-level industrial innovation consortia in the city.

(3) Solid industrial foundation--made in Wuhan

Wuhan’s industries cover the 38 of 41 main categories of all industries, and four of its industries, including integrated circuit, new display device, next-generation information network and biomedicine, have been included in the first batch of national strategic emerging industry clusters. The output value of each of these industries such as “optics, chips, new display screens, smart terminals, and the Internet”, automobile manufacturing and service, and health is growing at an increasing pace toward a trillion yuan. Wuhan is the world’s largest manufacturing base for optical fibers/cables, China’s largest production base for display panels of various sizes and photovoltaic devices and the largest production base for antiviral prescription drugs in China.

It is making every effort to build a "965” industrial cluster of 9 pillar industries, 6 strategic emerging industries, and 5 future-oriented industries, accelerate industrial transformation and upgrading and strengthen industrial support for high-quality development.

Four industries, integrated circuit, new display device, next-generation information network and biomedicine, have been included in the first batch of national strategic emerging industry clusters, putting Wuhan ahead, alongside Shanghai, of all other Chinese cities.

A "965” industrial cluster of 9 pillar industries, 6 strategic emerging industries, and 5 future-oriented industries is to be built.

9 pillar industries: New generation information technology for "optics, chips, new display screens, smart terminals, and the Internet”; automobile manufacturing and service; health and biotechnology; high-end equipment manufacturing; intelligent manufacturing; trade and logistics; modern finance; environmental protection; cultural tourism

6 pillar industries: Cyber security; aerospace; aerospace information; artificial intelligence; digital creativity; hydrogen energy

5 future-oriented industries: Electromagnetic energy; quantum technology; supercomputing; brain science and brain-inspired intelligence technology; deep earth, deep sea, and deep space.

(4) DNA of opening up
