Hubei boasts over 26.2 mln mu of wetlands
Hubei has had two national nature reserves (Honghu Lake and Longgan Lake) so far, while the Chenhu wetland is applying for its promotion to be another, the Forestry Administration of Hubei Province introduced on July 26, 2024.
Hubei is a large province of wetlands where the Yangtze River, Han River, and Qingjiang River converge, forming the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem combined by rivers and lakes in the country. It now has over 26.2 million mu of wetlands (1 mu is equivalent to around 667 square meters), accounting for 9.4 percent of its total area.
Up to now, Hubei has established 113 wetland parks and nature reserves at provincial level and above, including two national nature reserves, seven provincial nature reserves, 66 national wetland parks and 38 provincial wetland parks. It is also home to six wetlands of international importance, 11 wetlands of national importance and 48 wetlands of provincial importance. Among these, the numbers of wetlands of national importance and wetlands of international importance rank first and second in the country, respectively. (en.hubei.gov.cn by Ruan Xinqi)
