Wuhan ranks 13th among global science and technology clusters

Wuhan ranked the 13th among the global science and technology (S&T) innovation clusters with a six-year consecutive climb, stepping into top 15 for the first time, according to the latest list released by World Intellectual Property Organization on September 21, 2023.


World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, has released 16 editions of the Global Innovation Index (GII) report since 2007 annually. The report has been a tool for improving innovation and creation in global economy and an invaluable reference index for countries to make economic decisions.


Looking back at the global science and technology cluster rankings in 2018-2023, Wuhan maintained rapid growth, moving up from the 43rd place to the 13th place.


In terms of the GII report this year, all the world’s five biggest science and technology innovation clusters, namely, the Tokyo-Yokohama, Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai-Suzhou, are now located in East Asia.


Home to 24 science and technology innovation clusters, China is the country boasting the most science and technology innovation clusters on the list in 2023, with Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou taking the second place, Beijing the 4th, Shanghai-Suzhou the 5th, Nanjing the 11th and Wuhan the 13th. (en.hubei.gov.cn by Xin Mingcan and Ruan Xinqi)
